We completed on September 12, 2014 our fourth facility site survey in an effort to move our humanitarian program to Santo Domingo.
Unfortunately HOMS Hospital in Santiago, as of the Summer of 2014, notified ISF that they are no longer able to support multiple humanitarian organizations due to financial reasons and will need to limit their support to only a few organizations.
I am pleased to announce that have found our new hospital and local foundation to support our efforts to continue to provide to the underserved in this wonderful country the very best in the surgical management of all spine disorders.
We have now completed our first two clinics in preparation for a surgical week in September 2016. Clinic was performed on September 26, 2015 at the regional Trauma Hospital DR Dario Contreras which was recently renovated by the Government in an effort to improve the quality of care to the millions of impoverished people of Santo Domingo and the surrounding areas. Unfortunately, the new facility is in need of a number of large items to improve the safety for its many thousands of patients managed on a daily basis.
The new construction did not include important infrastructure requirements of any hospital. The 9 Operating rooms are well equipped but all share a single old autoclave that was salvaged from the old building. We are therefore being asked to bring our instruments already sterilized and wrapped in preparation for surgery which is clearly not safe, but is the only option for all of the patients receiving surgery in many facilities throughout the island. We will be fundraising for a new sterilization system for the facility along with a reverse osmosis clean water supply for the patients and sterilizer.
ISF's plan is to utilize this facility as well as others in the area to avoid any restrictions to the delivery of spine related medical care to the poor.
Thank you for your continued support and may God bless you and your families.
